On a day without meetings the calendar screen used to be a blank page with a single line of explanation. The grid was drawn around meetings that already existed, so on a new office's first day there was nothing to draw. Anyone opening the screen for the first time had no idea where to begin.
The hour grid is now always there, even when the count of meetings is zero. The hours in the grid are the office's working hours, and in the weekly view they cover the working hours of every day of that week. Night hours stay folded away, and one button opens the full twenty four. Above the grid sits a line telling you what to do, instead of a notice that there is no data.
A meeting is booked by clicking the hour you want. The form opens with the date, the hour and the member of staff of that column, and with the office's default duration. Every one of those can be changed. The time is picked in quarter hour steps.
Clicking an hour that has already passed no longer opens a form that would be refused anyway. The system says that a meeting can only be set for a time that has not passed yet, and offers the nearest free slot: one click opens a meeting on it.
Today is marked with a word and a tint, and the days when the office is closed are spelled out too. A meeting can still be booked on a closed day: an office that sees a client on a Friday should not have to write that meeting down outside the system.
